Food for Thought On the fence about whether to change jobs My advice is Dont Wait! Dont wait til youre miserable. Start looking for something else now if youre unhappy. You dont have to jump right into something new right now, you can simply poke around and see whats out there. Taking some kind of action now will actually make you feel better, trust me. I joke with people that as a career coach, I feel like a dentist sometimes clients wait until theyre in pain to come to me! I wish theyd reach out for help sooner. Its easier to find another job when you already have one. Youve heard this before its true. Heres why: You haveincome coming in andthat always feels better than no income. Youre not desperate to find something else, or crying in the bathroom because youre so miserable. (Yes, I did that in my last 9-5 job! I thought shopping therapy would help. It did for about an hour.) Dont wait til youre sick of where you are and feeling desperate to leave! Its better to look now when it doesnt feel as urgent. You wont be coming a place of desperation and anxiety if you start now. Plus, youll have time to find something you really enjoy. It takes time to identify your ideal career path so you need the time to figure it out. You dont want to jump into something else just for the heck of it. Be smart about it. Yet you dont want to leave anything out. How can you give small answers with a big impact? Heres your secret weapon: the expandable interview answer. How to use an expandable interview answer: First give an answer thats no longer than 60 seconds. In fact, err on the side of being too brief. Then simply end with an offer to say more: Would you like more detail about any part of that? This works well for the end of an interview answer. You can use it often (just not every time, lest you sound like a broken record). Theres a slightly different way to do this in the middle of a multi-part answer such Would you tell me a bit about yourself?Your answer to this first interview question is a bit more complex because (as you know if youve read the post I just linked) youll want to give an answer that includes your key selling points. And if youve read my book or my post about key selling points,you know that for key selling points to be verifiable (believable) you may need to back them up with stories. How are you going to do all that in less than one minute? Lets say youre emphasizing three key selling points your technical skills, your big accomplishment last year that saved your company $5 million, and your reputation for exceptional people skills. You might have time to tell a super-short story for one of these points, but not for all three. Use teasers.As you mention a key point, add something like . . . and I have a story Id love to tell you about that at some point. Voila! Youve given a concise answer that leaves em wanting more while making clear that, in fact, there is more to tell. They may ask for the story right off the bat, or you can watch for the right moment to tell it later. By using offers to say more and teasers, you allow yourself to err on the side of too-brief answers, knowing that your answers are easily expandable.(Like the puppies pictured above, they can start small and grow.) In the past, people making quick transitions were sometimes looked at as flaky or unstable. Today, it’s common to assume those who transition more frequently are also more experienced. They’ve seen different environments, and have been forced to grow their skills. If you’ve decided to become part of this growing trend, you may wonder where to start. You’ll need to decide if you want to keep the same type of job, or try something new, and whether or not to stay in the same industry. When changing careers, it’s often easiest to either keep the same job function in a new industry â€" or try a new job function in the same industry. But first, you need to decide which job function, and which industry. This is a place where people often get stuck. They wonder how to gather enough information to make this decision. A strong recommendation letter is always submitted to the employer.
